Enjoy running and participating in long distance races marathons? If you’ve ever run a marathon, you must realize how grueling it can get, and even finishing the race is an accomplishment. However, can you imagine running a marathon in the cool winds of the ? South Pole?
The Antarctic Ice Marathon is one of the most extreme races in the world. The annual race takes place just a few hundred miles from the South Pole. This year, the race took place on December 14, a video of which was posted on Instagram by the Now This News page.
Sean Tobin of Ireland, who won this year’s race in the men’s category with a record time of 2:53:33, explained what it feels like to run in such tough and grueling conditions. “You just sink. It’s like running in a really deep, muddy cross-country race, and even in a corner I took, I completely lost my legs and hit the ground, and I was trying to get up and keep going. It’s just oh boy, I had to go deep inside myself,” he said.
The event also includes a half marathon and a 100km ultra race. The runners must run over long stretches of ice and mountains in a region with an average wind chill temperature of -4 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tobin was overwhelmed after completing the race. “I just got emotional thinking about my brother and my mother, like everyone else with me. I don’t know why I’m getting so emotional. It’s like I have to go so deep. You know, and I felt like all those people were with me,” he said. American Becca Pizzi won the women’s race with a time of 4:24:15.
“It’s -65 in Nebraska from the wind chill, we’re colder than the South Pole!!” joked one user. “These people are crazy!! I’m so impressed!” said another. “It can’t be good for the body,” wondered another netizen. “I’m feeling windy, I don’t think I’m going to run,” joked another person.
