KALISPELL – Boxing is a martial art of growing interest nationwide and a Kalispell gym, Hard Knocks, offers anyone interested a chance to try the sport.
“It’s been a big part of my life for 30 years,” said Hard Knocks owner Jesse Uhde. “I decided to start teaching and giving back to the kids, the sport I fell in love with.”
After the gym in Kalispell has existed for almost two years, more and more people are trying the sport and falling in love with it too.
“I think I’ve learned a lot about myself and how to push my limits,” said Hard Knocks member Logan Bee. “I find that boxing not only builds character but also reveals character and just being able to get in the ring and face your fears.”
A big motivation for Uhde is to teach the next generation of boxers.
“That seems to be the most fun for them,” says Uhde with a grin. “The facial expressions when they win, definitely the best class to teach is junior class.”
Among those in his youth class is Uhde’s daughter Oliva, who follows her father and his love of boxing and will be competing at the championships in February.
With levels ranging from beginner to advanced, as well as personalized training, the gym has something for everyone.
“Everyone here is really supportive of each other, everyone wants to see each other succeed, it’s just a very positive atmosphere,” Bee said. “I think everyone should try boxing at least once, it’s just a great sport.”
